Picture a furnace burning so hot that the rock itself gives up. Ore is stone with metal locked inside it. Heat the stone far enough and the metal runs out as a bright liquid that can be poured off and kept. That freeing of metal from the stone around it is the whole picture, and the noun is simply the same event given a name.

可以想成一座燒得極熱的爐子。礦石其實是石頭，金屬被鎖在裡面。把石頭燒到夠熱，金屬就會流出來，變成一道明亮的液體，可以倒出來收起來。整個字就是這一件事：把金屬從包著它的石頭裡放出來。名詞的用法，只是把同一件事包成一個名字而已。

From Middle Dutch or Middle Low German smelten, 'to melt', from Proto-Germanic *smeltaną. It is related to English melt and cognate with German schmelzen, so the melting picture is in the word from the start.

這個字來自中古荷蘭文或中古低地德文的 smelten，意思是「熔化」。它跟英文的 melt 是親戚，德文 schmelzen 也同源。所以「熔」這個畫面，從一開始就在字裡面。

This one is not a meaning at all, it is a shape. Think of smell walking in wearing past-tense clothes. Nothing new has been added: the nose, the kitchen, the flower are all still there, and only the time has moved. Its twin, smelled, is the same word in a different coat.

Attested from very early Middle English smelte; the source notes it is likely to go back to Old English but is not recorded there.
