A slit is a long, narrow, straight cut or opening — think of the small opening in a mailbox, or a narrow cut in a skirt. As a verb, "to slit" means to make that kind of narrow cut — "slit the envelope open." It's the same word for the past tense too: "I slit it open yesterday."
