A slaying is an act of killing someone. Newspapers and police reports like this word: “a slaying in the city,” “the slaying of…” It sounds serious and a little dramatic, which is why headlines use it instead of a plainer “killing.” It comes from the old verb slay, to kill. Though actually, younger speakers also use slay in a totally different, playful way — “you slayed” meaning you looked or did amazingly well. That slang is not this newspaper sense. The two live side by side now, so the surrounding words tell you which one you are reading.
