Think of a line drawn from a point back in the past, running forward all the way to now. 'Since' marks that starting point and says 'from there onward'. The same idea of 'starting from a given point' stretches from time into reasoning: 'given that this is true, here is what follows'.

可以想成從過去某一點畫一條線，一路往前延伸到現在。since 就是標出那個起點，說「從那裡開始一直算下來」。這個「從某個既定的點出發」的想法，會從時間延伸到推理：「既然這件事是這樣，那接下來就……」。

From Middle English sithence, from Old English siththan 'after that, from the time that', a compound of sith 'after, since' + than 'then'. The core is temporal — 'from that time on' — and the causal 'given that / because' sense grew from it.

源自中古英語 sithence，再上溯古英語 siththan「在那之後、自那時起」，由 sith（之後）＋ than（那時）合成。核心是時間上的「從那時起」，因果上的「既然／由於」就是從這裡長出來的。
