A useful way to picture it: something in you pulls back instead of forward. An animal shies away from a hand; a person hangs back from the group. The word names that backing-off — and once you have it, the other meanings are just different things being backed away from, or the gap left when you stop short.
有股力量把你往後拉，而不是往前推。馬看到影子會往旁邊一閃，人在陌生人面前會退半步——shy 抓的就是那個「不往前」的動作。有意思的是，一旦你握住這個畫面，其餘的意思都只是換了「退開的對象」：退開人群是害羞，退開鏡頭是 camera-shy，甚至連「還差一點」也是同一件事——你停在目標前面，沒走到。要注意的是，這個詞條掛在名詞 shyness 底下，但底下好幾個意思其實只活在形容詞 shy 身上，名詞形式並不通用。
