A shoemaker is a person whose work is to make shoes and boots, often by hand or in a small shop. In older towns the shoemaker both made new pairs and worn ones. Today most shoes come from factories, so the word feels a little old; someone who mainly repairs shoes is more often called a cobbler. You still meet shoemaker in stories, on shop signs, and as a family name. It is a plain job-word, not slang and not grand.
