Sheepishly tells you how someone does something: in a slightly uncomfortable, way, because they know they have been silly or wrong. It is the adverb that belongs with . Someone grins sheepishly, admits sheepishly, looks sheepishly at the floor. The feeling is still mild — a little guilty, a little shy — not tragic. You hear it in stories and in ordinary talk when a writer or speaker wants you to see the face and the tone, not only the fact. Though actually, dropping the -ly and saying “he smiled ” is a common slip; English wants sheepishly there.
