The English singular seraph was cut back from the plural seraphim, which English took from Latin seraphim, and Latin from Biblical Hebrew שְׂרָפִים (sərāp̄īm), the plural of שָׂרָף (sārāp̄). The King James Bible even a double plural, seraphims. The Oxford English Dictionary says the singular seraph may have begun with John Milton, in Paradise Lost (1667).
