The state of having worked somewhere longer, or holding a higher rank, than others, and the special treatment or respect that can come with that. In a workplace, 'seniority' often decides things like who gets picked first for a schedule or a promotion, or who keeps their job during cuts - 'by seniority' means 'by how long each person has worked there.'
