Secession is the act, or the moment, when a country or state officially stops being part of another country and becomes independent — or tries to. It is the noun that sits next to the verb . Historians talk about the secession of the southern American states in 1860 and 1861. The word feels formal and serious. It is about and law, not about a person walking out of a room. A secession can start a war, a long argument, or years of talks; the word itself does not tell you which.
