A ship that is seaworthy is strong and safe enough to go out on the sea. It has no serious cracks, the engine works, and it will not come apart in rough water. The word is sea + -worthy, and worthy here means “fit for,” not “this ship deserves a prize.” You hear the same -worthy in trustworthy (fit to be trusted) and (fit to fly). If a boat is old, broken, or missing parts, it is not seaworthy, and people should not sail it. It is a slightly formal, practical word: inspectors, sailors, and insurance people use it when safety is the point.
