Scrapings are the small bits that come off when you a surface. They are not the tool and not the action; they are the stuff left behind — on the blade, in the pan, or in a little dish. A cook talks about the scrapings of a cake bowl. A doctor or a lab may take skin scrapings: a few flakes from the skin, to look at under a microscope. The word is almost always plural in ordinary English. You might hear a single in careful lab notes, meaning one sample, but everyday speech prefers the plural.
