Money passing through your hands, and you holding some of it back instead of letting it all flow out — the act of keeping, the amount kept, or the pile that builds up.

錢從你手上經過，你沒有讓它全部流出去，而是伸手把一部分攔下來、留住。save 這個動作的底層就是「不讓它消失」——留住錢、留住時間、留住一條命，都是同一個手勢。saving 是這個手勢名詞化的結果，所以它可以指這個動作本身（儲蓄的習慣）、指被攔下來的那一份（省下的錢），也可以指日積月累留住的那一堆（積蓄）。差別只在你看的是動作、是那一份，還是那一堆。

From Latin salvus "unharmed, safe" (also behind safe and salvage): to keep something from being lost or used up — whether that is a life or a sum of money.

save 來自拉丁文 salvus「完好無損、安全的」（同源的還有 safe、salvage）。原本的意思是「使某物保持完好、不受損失」，救人一命是這樣，把錢留住不花掉也是這樣——都是不讓東西流失掉。中文的「省」和「存」把這兩邊分開了，英文則共用同一個底層畫面。
