Picture a jumper standing at the far end of a short track. The jump has not happened yet; what happens first is the running, and that running is what gives the jump its speed. The run-up is that stretch before the real thing. Move the same stretch onto a calendar and it becomes the weeks in front of an election or a holiday. Move it onto a price chart and it becomes the part of the line that keeps climbing before anything is announced.
