Rugger is a British informal word for rugby, and more tightly for Rugby Union — the fifteen-player game, not Rugby League. It was coined at Oxford in the 1880s in the same playful way as soccer, from Association football: chop the word and stick -er on the end. Rugby itself is named after Rugby School in England, where the game grew.
