The person an actor pretends to be in a play, film, or show.

The part you play — like an actor handed a part in a play, told who to be and what to do on stage. That theatre picture is the oldest, most concrete one. From it grows the everyday sense: the 'part' a person or thing plays in a real situation, the share of the work or the effect they have, even when there is no stage at all.
可以想成「你扮演的那個角色」——像演員拿到劇本裡的一個角色，被告知要演誰、在台上做什麼。這個劇場畫面是最早、最具體的。從這裡長出日常的用法：一個人或一樣東西在真實情況裡所扮演的「角色」、所負責的那一份、所造成的影響——就算根本沒有舞台。

From French rôle, originally the roll of paper on which an actor's part was written; hence 'the part an actor plays', later extended to the part anyone or anything plays in a situation.
源自法語 rôle，本來指寫著演員台詞的那卷紙；因此先有「演員扮演的角色」之意，後來才擴大成「任何人或任何東西在情境裡扮演的角色」。
