In music, especially rock, jazz, and blues, a riff is a short pattern of notes, often played on guitar, that repeats through a song and gives it its main hook — you can often recognize a famous song just from its riff. From this musical sense, English also uses 'riff' more loosely for any short, creative repeated idea — a comedian can 'riff on' a topic, meaning improvise jokes around it without a fixed script, building idea after idea off the last one. This looser sense ('riff on something') is very common in casual, modern talk about comedy, writing, or conversation.
