One way to hold this word: a head turning round to look behind it. Everything retro does is some version of that turn. Turn round and copy what you see, and you get the jacket sewn last month with a 1970s cut. Stop thinking about single objects and name the view itself, and you get retro as a trend that comes and goes. Turn round and look over a whole working life, and you get the cinema season that plays one director's films from first to last. The same direction sits inside its relatives: a retrospective looks back over a career, and a retrorocket backwards to slow a spacecraft down.
