Retraining is the learning itself — the course, the months of new skills so someone can do a different job. Same idea as , but this form names the process. “She is retraining as a teacher” still uses the verb; “the government paid for her retraining” uses this noun. Though actually, people sometimes say it when they only mean extra practice on the same job; the core meaning is a change of direction. It is not a railway, and it is not being held back (that is restraining).
