Reputedly is the adverb: according to what people say. "She is reputedly the richest woman in town" means that is the story going around, not a fact you have checked. It is a polite, slightly formal hedge — useful in news and essays. In everyday talk, people are more likely to say "apparently" or "they say". It does not make the claim stronger; it makes the speaker a little safer.
