Think of a huge place of towers and with something dark and dirty going in at one end — crude oil, raw sugar — and something clean coming out at the other: petrol, white sugar. Nothing new is invented inside; the unwanted parts are taken out until only the useful part is left. The -ery ending simply says 'the place where that happens'.

    A building, or a mass of machinery, used to produce refined products such as sugar, oil, or metals.

This oil find has greatly helped China’s industrial development, and the oil fields are now linked to Lanchow by pipeline and by rail. Large refineries have been built at Lanchow and at Tushantzu in Dzungaria.
