A person who sees and accepts things as they truly are, rather than how they wish them to be — practical and clear-eyed, not overly hopeful or overly negative. In art and writing, a realist is also someone who works in the style of realism, showing ordinary life exactly as it looks, without making it prettier or more dramatic.
