Protracted means something goes on for a long time — and usually longer than people wanted or expected. A protracted war, a protracted argument, a protracted illness. The word is a bit formal. It often carries a tired feeling: not a pleasant long holiday, but a thing that dragged on. Prolonged is a close cousin and a little more neutral; protracted more clearly says this took too long.
