A porcupine is an animal whose back and sides are covered with long, stiff, sharp hairs called quills. When it is scared, the quills stand up, and they can stick in another animal’s skin. It is not a hedgehog: a hedgehog is smaller, with short spines, and you may see one in a garden; a porcupine is larger and lives wild in other parts of the world. The English name is an old picture, not a scientific label: from French and Latin it means “spine pig” — a pig with spines. Cartoons often draw the quills like arrows all over the face; real porcupines are less neat than that.
