To ponder is to spend time thinking carefully and seriously — about a problem, a hard question, or something that has already happened. You do not ponder a snack. You ponder a choice that sits heavy in the mind. It is a little more formal than ‘think about,’ and it often suggests slow time. You can ponder a question, ponder over a letter, or ponder why someone did what they did. Though actually the Latin idea is weighing: as if you hold the thought in your hands and feel how heavy it is. That is why the word feels slow, not quick.
