A politico is someone who lives in : an elected person, or someone always in the party, the meetings, the deals. English took the word from Italian politico or Spanish ítico, where it is a normal word for a political person. In English, though actually, it almost always has a sour little taste — not 'a public servant' but 'one of those political types.' Magazines and newspapers use it a lot. It is not a job title you would print on a ballot, and it is not a kind word. If you want to stay neutral, say politician.
