A compound you can read straight off its two halves: police + woman. Picture a woman in uniform who is part of the police force — the same job as any officer, with the word simply telling you the officer is a woman. In modern English many people prefer the gender-neutral police officer, and policewoman is used when the person's being a woman is what you want to point out.
