A pocketful is as much as a pocket will hold. A child might have a pocketful of sweets or stones; a person might come home with a pocketful of coins. It is a loose amount, not a measured one — pockets differ, and nobody is counting. People also use it in a soft, not-literal way: a pocketful of dreams, a pocketful of trouble, meaning quite a lot, carried around with you. The everyday, physical sense is the one to learn first. You can also say a pocket full of coins in four words; pocketful packs the same idea into one.
