    A pilgrim is a person who travels a long way, for religion, to a holy place — a shrine, a temple, a city that matters in their faith. Muslims going to , Christians going to Jerusalem or , and temple walkers on a long route: English pilgrim covers that religious . It is a serious, ordinary word, not slang. Though actually, with a capital P, the Pilgrims in American history books are a specific group of English (the people). That is a name. A small-p pilgrim is any holy-place . There is a verb to pilgrim, but you will almost always meet the noun.

English peregrine is the same Latin word that kept both r sounds. The l in pilgrim happened because early Romance disliked two r sounds close together; Italian pellegrino shows the same change.
