A pilchard is a small sea fish that people eat. It is , silver, and lives in schools. In shops you often meet it , sometimes in tomato sauce — a very ordinary British food word, not formal and not slang. Though actually, sardine and pilchard are close, and countries do not all draw the line in the same place: some people use pilchard for the bigger adult fish and sardine for the smaller one, but tins and recipes mix the names. You would not use it for a large fish.

組成From an older English form pilcher, later reshaped with the ending -ard (the same kind of ending as in drunkard). Where pilcher itself came from, nobody really knows. Dutch has a similar-looking word, pelser.
