A picturesque place, such as a village, street, or valley, is pretty to look at and interesting because it still looks old-fashioned.
風景如畫；古色古香
One way to hold this word: something looks the way a painting looks — as if a painter had already chosen this view, framed it, and hung it on a wall. It is not just pretty; it is pretty in a way that seems composed, worth capturing.
眼前的東西「長得像一幅畫」。不只是好看而已，而是好看得彷彿已經有人替你選好角度、框好邊、掛上牆——石板路、爬滿藤蔓的舊石屋、遠處的山谷，看一眼就想拍下來。picture（畫）加上 -esque（像…的風格），字面就是「畫一般的」。

From French pittoresque, itself from Italian pittoresco 'in the manner of a painter' (pittore 'painter'), reshaped in English under the influence of picture.
源自法語 pittoresque，再往上是義大利語 pittoresco「畫家風格的」（pittore＝畫家），進入英語後被 picture 一字帶著改寫成現在的拼法。所以這個字從一開始講的就是「畫家會怎麼看這個東西」——這也解釋了為什麼它同時能形容風景，也能形容文字。
