Petroleum is the thick, dark oil that comes from deep under the ground or under the sea. Factories turn it into petrol (British for the fuel you put in a car), paraffin, plastics, and many other chemicals. Though actually, British English keeps the two words apart: petroleum is the raw stuff from the earth; petrol is the car fuel made from it. They are almost twin words, but people do not use them the same way. Americans more often say oil or crude oil for the raw stuff, and gasoline or gas for the car fuel. Petroleum is the formal industry and science word.
