Pensive describes a person — or a face, a look, a silence — that is deep in thought, and the thought is usually heavy: worry, sadness, or something they cannot shake off. They may stare out of a window or grow quiet in the middle of a conversation. It is not the same as thinking hard in class, and it is not the same as thoughtful when thoughtful means kind and considering other people. Pensive is a slightly word; you meet it in stories more than in everyday chat. A pensive smile is a small smile with the mind somewhere else.
