A peninsula is land with water around almost every side, but still joined to a bigger land at one end. On a map it often sticks out into the sea like a finger. It is not an island. An island has water all the way around, so you cannot walk to it unless there is a bridge. On a peninsula you can still walk to the main land, even if the joining part is thin. This is a geography word, the kind you meet in school and in the news when people talk about places. It is not a poetic word by itself; it is a map word.
