Pendulous means hanging down loosely and free to swing — a heavy branch, a long , a pouch that droops. It comes from Latin pendulus, from a verb 'to hang'. It is a , slightly scientific adjective: like it for leaves, flowers, and animal parts; everyday people usually say hanging or droopy. It does not mean thoughtful (that is pensive), and it is not the clock's pendulum, though they are cousins: a pendulum is the hanging weight that swings. Use pendulous when the hanging thing is slack and can move, not when it is fixed tight.
