You say or write something parenthetically when you slip it in as an extra while the main point is about something else. It is the adverb that matches parenthetical: the side note as a way of speaking, not as a kind of family. “Parenthetically, the figures are last year’s” means that last bit is not the main claim; it is added while you go. Writers and careful speakers use it. Though actually, most people in ordinary talk just say “by the way” or “oh, and.” Same family as parenthesis — still nothing to do with being a mum or dad.
