The curved marks ( ) used in writing to add extra information into a sentence — information that could be removed and the sentence would still make sense on its own. 'Parentheses' is the plural form; one single mark, or the pair together, is technically called a 'parenthesis,' though people mostly just say 'parentheses' or 'brackets' in daily speech.
