    You put p.m. after a time to show that the time is between noon and midnight — that is, in the afternoon, the evening, or the night.

    「p.m.」是拉丁文 post meridiem 的縮寫，可以想成「過了中午之後」。中文會分成「下午三點」和「晚上八點」兩種說法，英文卻只用同一個 p.m.：只要在中午 12 點到半夜 12 點之間，數字後面加 p.m. 就可以了。中午之前的時間則用 a.m.（例如 7 a.m. 是早上七點）。

You can picture p.m. as a small label you stick on after a clock time. On a 12-hour clock every number comes round twice, so 3:00 is ambiguous by itself; p.m. points at the second one — the one after noon and before midnight.
