An owlet is a young owl, still small, often fluffy, still in the nest or only just learning to fly. People use it the way they use or : the baby of that animal. It is a gentle, slightly story-book word; a scientist might just say a young owl or a chick, but nature writing and children’s books like owlet. It is not a kind of owl with a different name — it is the age. Though actually, -et here is an old little-making ending, so owlet is “little owl”, which is why people also use it for a small owl even when they are not being exact about age.
