Picture the clock passing the point where you were supposed to stop, and things carrying on anyway. At work that extra stretch is overtime, and so is the money it earns. A tied game gets the same treatment — play past the whistle until someone wins — and a mind that will not switch off is described as if it were doing the same thing.
