    Outwards is a direction: towards the outside, away from the centre. A crowd moves outwards from the square; ripples spread outwards; some doors open outwards. In British English the -s is at home on the adverb (outwards, , backwards). American English often drops it and outward for the same job. Neither side is confused in speech. This is not about how something seems — that is outwardly. Think of a point in the middle and arrows leaving it. You can talk about feelings spreading outwards too, but the picture is still movement, not a polite face.
