When you outdistance someone, you go so much faster that they are left far behind. The first picture is a race: you run, ride, or cycle ahead, and the gap keeps growing. People also stretch it. A company can outdistance its rivals; a student can outdistance the rest of the class. It is a little more formal than “leave behind” or “pull ahead,” and it always has that feeling of a wide space opening up, not a tiny lead. Though actually, it does not have to be sport at all — only the idea of getting so far in front that catching you looks hard.
