A piece of music that a composer has written, especially a serious or important one. Musicians use it with a number, like 'Opus 9,' to list a composer's works in order. People also use it loosely, half-jokingly, for any big creative work someone is proud of - a director might call their biggest film 'his opus.' It is a formal, slightly literary word; you would not use it for a simple pop song.
