    Oppressive describes something that treats people and , especially by using power to control them and take away their freedom — an "oppressive government" or "oppressive laws" don't let people speak or live freely. The word is also used, in a very different but related way, for weather or heat: "oppressive heat" is heat so heavy and strong that it feels hard to breathe or move, like the air itself is pressing down on you.
