Okra is a green vegetable: long pods with lines along them that you cook. It is important in the cooking of West Africa, of South Asia, and of the southern United States — for example in gumbo, a thick stew. When you cut it and cook it, it gives out a sticky juice that soup. Some people love that; some people do not. You can also fry it or pickle it. Though actually, on the plant it is the fruit, but on the table everyone calls it a vegetable. In some kinds of English the same pods are called ladies' fingers, which here means this vegetable, not a different food.
