Used about things that belong to a job, or that a job causes. Occupational clothes are the clothes of that work. An occupational hazard is a danger that comes with the work — a cook’s burns, a teacher’s sore throat. An occupational disease is an illness the job brings on over time. The word is at home in medicine, law, and company English; ordinary people still use it in “occupational hazard,” often half-joking (“long meetings are an occupational hazard”). It is not the same as occupied (busy), and it is not occupation when that means an army taking a country.
