A shape that has been pulled long. Take a circle and stretch it, or take a square and stretch it — either way one direction is now clearly longer than the other, and the eye follows that length. Everything the word does sits on that stretch: describing a leaf, a table or a field, and naming the long patch itself.

Stretched out in one direction — much longer than it is wide. In American English this covers rounded shapes as well as straight-sided ones, so a long thin leaf, a long oval dish and a long rectangle can all be called oblong.
