Obesity is the state of being very fat in a way that is unhealthy — the noun that sits beside the adjective obese. You hear it in medicine, public-health news, and school biology: childhood obesity, obesity rates, the obesity epidemic (a common, slightly dramatic newspaper phrase). It names a condition, not a person: we say people living with obesity more often now, rather than calling someone “an obesity.” It is formal; friends do not usually each other with this word.
