    英文的 oak 一個字管兩件事：長在地上的那棵「橡樹」，還有從它身上來的那種「橡木」。可以想成英文常讓樹的名字順便當木頭的名字——oak、pine（松）、cedar（雪松）都是這樣，樹砍下來做成桌子以後，還是叫同一個字。指樹的時候可以數：an oak、two oaks、oak trees；指木頭的時候不能數，所以說 made of oak（用橡木做的），不說 made of an oak。

Think of one big, broad-branched tree standing in a cool northern field — and then think of the same tree cut into a heavy tabletop. English lets one word cover both the living tree and the hard wood it gives you, so 'an oak' is the tree and 'solid oak' is the material.
