A nursemaid is a woman paid to look after young children in a private home. She is not a hospital nurse, even though the first half of the word looks the same. A hundred years ago this was a common job in rich houses: she dressed the children, walked with them, and stayed with them while the parents were busy. Today the word feels old-fashioned. People more often say nanny if it is the person's main job, or if it is only for a few hours. You still meet nursemaid in stories set in the past, and sometimes as a teasing word for someone who fusses over adults as if they were babies.
